What can be better than celebrating the birthday of Dr. Seuss?  Celebrating the birthday of Dr. Seuss on Read Across America Day!!!

Read Across America Day is a reading awareness and motivation program.  They want every child in every community to celebrate reading.  How great!  Reading is such an important skill.  For me, language and literacy are almost two sides of the same coin.  I have a passion for both and I also understand how important each skill is for a student to be successful.

So today, on this birthday of Dr. Seuss, set aside some time to explore reading!  Here are some tips you can do to enhance the reading process:

Since it is the birthday of Dr. Seuss – may I suggest some of my favorite Dr. Seuss books:

Green Eggs and Ham is a classic book that still resonates with everyone.  There is repetition, rhyming and food that my students find “icky”…what more could you want?

Oh The Thinks You Can Think brings your imagination to a new level.  I love the nonsense words and the strange animals.  The story is wacky and fun with beautiful colors.

The Lorax is a favorite of mine because it touches on saving the planet because someone comes and tries to cut down too many trees.  This book also lends itself to Earth Day reading time.

I hope everyone has a great March 2nd – whether you celebrate the birthday of Dr. Seuss, you celebrate Read Across America Day or you do both!!
